Movie Review: Deathgasm

It’s a Netflix night again and I thought I would watch something I would never see in the theaters. So I cruised through the Trending section and found Deathgasm.

Now, a little about me and movies. I love horror, I love to laugh and, after a long day at work, I don’t want to think. Reading the blurb on Deathgasm (and seeing that it got 4 stars) I thought this movie might be the perfect flick.

And I was absolutely right.

Deathgasm stars Milo Cawthorne, James Blake, Kimberley Crossman and was written and directed by Jason Lei Howden. It is about a high school boy who finds himself being moved to a rural neighborhood to live with relatives because his mother went insane. The boy, whose name is Brodie, is a heavy metal fan. This does not endear him with his new family or the community in which he is living. He finds himself bullied by the other students and his new family.

But Brodie comes to make friends with two stereotypical nerds and another Heavy Metal fan, Zakk. He also makes friends with the town’s teenage beauty, Medina. Brodie’s love of Heavy Metal leads him to form a band with Zakk and the two nerds called Deathgasm. Brodie and Zakk find an ancient text (I won’t say how) with a Heavy Metal ballad.

Of course, Deathgasm has to play the song. And that’s when all Hell breaks loose (literally). The song turns out to be a ballad from Hell, preparing the way for a REALLY bad demon. How does Hell prepare? By turning all the townspeople into murdering demons.

This movie takes “suspension-of-disbelief” to a new high. Half the time, I did not know who was who. But it didn’t matter. I was entertained by the over-the-top violence, hokey dialog and funny humor. The implements of death ranged from swords and chainsaws to dildos and vibrators (don’t ask). Blood is everywhere (more blood that anyone I know has). The violence is so extreme that it appears unrealistic and rather easy to stomach. Some of the violence is just humorous. The demons are also over-the-top with bizarre looks and fluids coming out of every orifice (some of that was pretty disgusting).

The characters are goofy and are very hard to relate to. When a couple of the main characters are killed, I don’t think anything of it. In fact, I had a hard time remembering any of their names as I write this. But that didn’t matter. The campy fun and visuals make up for the lack of a plot or character development.

This movie is worth a look if you like the Evil Dead series. It is fun and and does not require much thought (feel free to get that popcorn without pausing the movie. You won’t miss anything). I give it three stars.
