Make Your Bed!

I decided, today, to make a life change. Every morning I am going to get up and run before work. Why? Because I decided that, in the morning, before I do anything, I am going to do something for me and complete my daily task. Yes, I want to run in the morning to get my running out of the way and not have to deal with it after work (I am so unmotivated after work). But I also know that my days will be better and I will have more energy. I know I will be able to accomplish more because I will have a head start.

This idea did not just pop into my head. I listed to the Joe Rogan podcast. He had Jordan Peterson on his show. I already downloaded his book, 12 Rules for Life, but I have not started it. I can’t exactly remember what he said but I believe he said that when one wakes up, he should make his bed. It is an important to start the day with a task because it then becomes easier to start other tasks. It sounded like a good idea, so I thought my morning task should be to go out and run.

I walked into my friend’s office and told him what I was planning. He said he had heard this before from a speech. He sent me a link and I watched. Wow. The speech was the commencement address at the University of Texas at Austin by retired Naval Admiral William McRaven who was the ninth commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command. He used to train Naval Seals. I learned a lot more than just how to start my day correctly. I found the speech so inspiring that I decided to write about what I learned.

Make Your Bed

Get up and make your bed. Though it may seem simple it is the perfect way to start a busy day. Completing such a simple task will motivate one to complete another task. And then another. And, though it may see simple, performing any task correctly is important simply because if one cannot complete the simple tasks correctly, he will not be able to complete the difficult tasks correctly.

Measure a Man by the Size of His Heart, Not His Flippers

Always judge a person on his integrity and heart. Don’t depend on his looks or first impression. Respect these people. Help them and let them help you. Life is hard and we can use all the valuable help we can get.

Don’t Back Down from the Sharks

Life is hard and not fair. We will fail over and over again. But do not be afraid to fail. Each failure is a lesson learned and makes us stronger people. But remember this: no matter how hard life gets and all the times you might fail, keep moving on. Never give up. Be that one with the big heart that others seek out.

And the Big One

Finally, believe in the power of hope. The greatest men and women, people who changed the world, instilled hope of a better world in others. Be the person who instills that hope.

In Conclusion

It is amazing what a six minute video and a few hundred words can inspire. You can watch the video below:

I decided to add this entry for me more than the reader. To remind me of how to live and motivate me when I do not feel like doing the right thing. So I am going to wake up every morning to run.

Hell, I’m really motivated right now. I think I’ll make my bed right after I run too
