Movie Review: Dark was the Night

Time to review another movie I watched on Netflix. Tonight, I am feeling like a horror move. The tough part about finding a horror movie is finding one that has more than one or two stars from the other viewers. I finally stumbled upon “Dark was the Night” and thought I would give it a go.

This movie is written by Tyler Hisel and directed by Jack Heller. It stars Kevin Durand, Lukas Haas, Steve Agee. It is an American film released in 2014.

It is about a small town located in the middle of the woods. The townspeople begin to see that their pets and livestock start disappearing without a trace. The mystery deepens then strange unidentifiable footprints of some large animal are found through the town only to disappear when entering the forest.

The townspeople begin to become afraid. They are reminded of a Native American legend involving a demon that roams in the trees of the forest and kills. The bodies of people the demon has killed have been found high in the trees. That is when the troubled sheriff and his deputy are called to help.

Now the sheriff has a potpourri of issues. He is dealing with the death of his son (which occurred on his watch), his estranged wife and an insecure son who just wants his family back together. With all that, the sheriff has lost his confidence and fears he cannot be depended on and cannot protect anyone. Not really a good attitude a sheriff should have.

The animal/demon eventually kills a group of hunters and puts the bodies in a tree. This confirms the townspeople’s fears  and they gather at a church for the final stand with the demon/animal-thingy.

I mean…wow! There is a lot going on in this movie. I mean they should have included a program to keep track of what is going on. The plot was all over the place. It was a movie that didn’t know what it wanted to be. Is this a horror about a vengeful demon? Is this a drama where a a lost soul tries to find his inner strength and self-worth? Or is this a mystery where the viewer tries to solve the mystery of the murdering animal?

Guess what: none of those questions are answered at the end. I still don’t know what that thing was at the end. I still don’t know if the sheriff was able to find himself. Heck, I don’t even know if anyone lived at the end.  Cinematography and acting was good but that was about it. Waste of two hours.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars. It gets one star because I didn’t have to pay to see it.
