Movie Review: Don’t Breathe

Poster

When the movie “Don’t Breathe” came out, I have to be honest with you, I did not want to see it. There was just something about it that said, “Same old thing”. Yeah, yeah, yeah…victim becomes the predator. Whatever. I also thought it would require a little too much “suspension of disbelief”. In fact, I watched the movie “31” (twice) before I took the time to watch this one (and that movie really sucked. Read my review).

I have one word for that decision: idiotic. I mean…wow.

This is a 2016 movie written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (both wrote the Evil Dead remake) and was directed by Fede Alvarez (who also directed Evil Dead). It stars Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto. I should have known it would be good when rottentomatoes.com gave it an 80 score.

The movie is about a group of young people who are burglars. One (Levy) commits crime to get away from her terrible life, one (Minnette) because he is infatuated with the the girl but really does not want to do it and one (Zovatto) because he is a low life piece of garbage. They decide to make one final big score: Stealing three hundred thousand dollars from a blind Gulf War veteran (Lang) that won a huge settlement from the death of his only daughter.

What pieces of low-life crap!

Well, it runs out this guy they want to rob is a tad of a bad-ass. Not only does he thwart their plans but he locks them inside his house and starts to stalk the burglars. He uses his sharpened senses against their ability to see (and he has a kick ass dog). Why he does not call the police by setting off his state-of-the-art security system is answered later in the movie (remember the line by Zovatto, “Just because he’s blind doesn’t mean he’s a saint.”).

Wow. I mean…wow.

This movie surpassed all my expectations. The first thing I thought was how ripped up Lang was. My glory, someone did not miss a morning of protein and push ups. The tension was extreme. I found myself actually holding my breath because this guy heard every sound and could smell everything. Lang was awesome. Great acting. The other three were…well…OK. I did not think much of them (probably because they were just not very good people and they deserved what they got).

It was a very intense movie. I have seen it twice. The only problem with it was that I did not feel good at the end. I did not feel that any justice was done. I did not like anyone in the movie and everyone got what they deserved. It almost felt incomplete. But do not think that means there should be a sequel. No, sir. The movie was definitely over.

Great movie. No happy ending. Something you will talk about with your mate after. See this one. I Rate this one 5 of 5 stars.
